Trail magic comes in many forms. From the water caches in the desert to remote Sierra trailhead hitches. Rounding a bend in Oregon to see a cool-box on the trail ahead and the suspense that follows as you check to see whether you’re too late. Beer tokens left behind bars and day-hikers offering to share whatever snacks they have.

Washington however, provided the best trail magic of all. The seasons were changing and canopies of green now draped flushes of purple and red. The valleys and hills burst with colour. An abundance of berries smothered the trail.

When we weren’t walking we were foraging for nature’s very own trail magic. If one of us fell behind the other was sure to expect them in a minute with a handful of huckleberries to share.
